Jonathan was born in 1989, in Quito, Ecuador. At 11, moved to Spain and earned his precollege at
Rodolfo Halffter Conservatory with Mateo Lorente. Floril continues his piano studies in New York as the
recipient of the Harold and Helen Schonberg Pianist Scholarship at Manhattan School of Music. Having previously
studied with Solomon Mikowsky, Floril pursues his Bachelors with the head of the piano department,
Marc Silverman, a student of Abram Chasins (Josef Hofmann´s pupil). While in New York, Floril has
also performed at Master Classes for Paul Badura-Skoda, Alexander Braginsky, Ann Schein, Jacques Rouvier
and Karl-Heinz Kämmerling.
In 2008, Floril was awarded First Prize and the Jan Gorbaty Memorial Prize -- for the best performance
of Chopin’s works -- at the 59th Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition in New York City, as
well as being awarded the Bronze Medal at the 2008 Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition. Previously, Floril was also awarded over 20 top prizes at National (Spain) and International Piano
Competitions, including First Prizes at XI Ricard Viñes, V Ciudad de Huesca, VII Pedro Bote (Best performance
of Spanish Music), VI YAMAHA Intercentros (Madrid), XVIII Jacinto Guerrero (Toledo); Second Prizes
at XVII Ciutat de Carlet (2008) (Senior Category), XIII and XIV Infanta Cristina (Madrid) and the Mieczyslaw
Munz Piano Competition (New York, 2007). In 2007, his acclaimed recital at the Palau de les Arts Reina
Sofía, where the musical director is Maestro Lorin Maazel, was described by critics as “more than a
prodigy, not only because of what he performs, but also how he performs” (Levante); which was shortly
followed by his orchestral debut on Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Maestro Pierino
Gamba. At February 7, 2009 Recital, Jonathan will perform pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Scriabin.
